First Generation College Students

Graduate with cap and gownFirst Generation College students who come from low-income families and/or whose families are unable to provide support or understanding of the college experience are often at risk in the university setting. They have transitional needs not generally met by traditional support services and often find themselves in academic uncertainties and unsure where to turn for emotional support. These students can be at risk of dropping out when they can’t find meaningful connection between themselves and the university community. A student’s ability to participate from a position of strength and empowerment in his or her own education is necessary for holistic learning to take place. The CWC is committed to supporting first generation students holistically in their academic retention toward degree attainment. Through a variety of resources and services we provide assistance in developing relationships with other learners and with the university community with the goal in helping the first generation college student develop a strong sense of their academic selves.
